Civil War letters, 1862-1865.

The collection contains over 100 Civil War letters, written by Bartmess while serving with the 8th Indiana Cavalry in Tennessee, Georgia, and North Carolina, to his family in Jay County, Ind. Topics include the Battles of Vicksburg and Murfreesboro; politics; equipment and supplies; and the importance of religion and family. There are several other letters from other family members as well.

The 8th Indiana Cavalry was first organized in Indianapolis in 1861 as the 8th Indiana Infantry. In April 1863 the regiment was given horses and served as mounted infantry.
